Custom Design and Build of New Home with Detached Garage and ADU

Hawk Design Build delivered a custom designed and built home in Black Mountain, NC that combines comfortable living spaces with thoughtful outdoor areas. The project includes a primary residence, a two-bay garage, and an accessory dwelling unit, all connected by a covered breezeway to provide a cohesive layout and easy access between structures.

The main house features two bedrooms and two bathrooms, with hardwood floors throughout the living areas. Vaulted ceilings give the rooms a spacious feel, and a wood burning fireplace anchors the main living area. That living area was laid out as an open plan to encourage flow between the kitchen, dining, and family spaces, making it easy to live and entertain without boxed-in rooms.

Outside the main entrance, a large covered front porch offers protected outdoor seating facing a beautifully landscaped garden with a custom built waterfall. At the rear of the house there is a large open deck that broadens the living area outdoors and provides room for dining, relaxing, or watching the mountain views. These outdoor elements were designed to extend usable space and connect the indoor rooms to the landscape.

The attached garage and ADU sit beside the main home and are connected through a covered breezeway, which keeps circulation convenient while maintaining separation between the living areas. The garage is a two-bay space sized to meet everyday vehicle and storage needs. Above the garage, the ADU provides a private one-bedroom, one-bath living area, with hardwood floors and a vaulted ceiling to match the aesthetic of the main house.

The ADU includes a custom kitchen tailored to the smaller footprint, offering efficient use of space while retaining high-quality finishes. A covered porch at this unit includes a hot tub, and above that porch there is an open deck with an outdoor fireplace to create a second-level entertaining area that combines privacy with outdoor comfort.

Throughout the project, Hawk Design Build focused on a cohesive design so the main house and ADU read as parts of a single property while still serving different household needs. The covered breezeway is a practical feature that shelters everyday movement between buildings, and the combination of porches, decks, and fireplaces gives the home multiple options for outdoor living.
